Sleep, did you know that..?

1. Did you know that more than one in three Europeans have problems sleeping at night and that the phenomenon is constantly increasing?

2. Did you know that 62% of adults worldwide say they don't sleep as well as they would like and that as many as 67% of adults report sleep disturbances at least once a night?

3. Did you know that sleep deprivation is associated with lower productivity at work, resulting in the loss of a significant number of working days each year? Annually, the United Kingdom and Germany lose just over 200,000 working days, corresponding to more than 1.65 million working hours each.

4. Did you know that Europeans who report having sleep problems are more likely to experience extreme fatigue (burnout) (46%) than those who get regular or good quality sleep (26%)?

5. Did you know that sleeping 7-8 hours a night increases productivity by 20%, while sleeping less than 5 hours reduces it by 29%? Many believe that to accomplish more you need to sacrifice sleep. Studies show that, on the contrary, insufficient sleep is associated with lower overall productivity, especially in a large number of specific fields.

6. Did you know that 2022 data indicates that 35% of Europeans have difficulty getting a full night's rest? In 2021 they were only 15%.

7. Did you know that sleep problems increase the risk of accidents at work by 2.5 times, especially in shift jobs? The causes of these injuries are usually reduced reaction times and impaired judgment.

8. Did you know that shortening your sleep duration by as little as 16 minutes and an earlier wake-up time are correlated with a greater frequency of intrusive, non-work-related thoughts the following day? Studies show that after a greater number of cognitive distractions in the same day, you go to bed earlier and wake up earlier than usual due to tiredness.

9. Did you know that too little or too much sleep is associated with decreased cognitive performance, such as processing speed, visual attention, memory and problem-solving ability? For the average middle-aged or older adult, a consistent seven to eight hours of sleep per night, without too much fluctuation in duration, is good for cognitive abilities and overall well-being.

10. Did you know that there is no magic number or ideal amount of sleep per night that applies to everyone? The optimal amount of sleep needs to be individualized, as it depends on many factors, such as daily performance, cognitive function, mental health, physical health, quality of life and more. The optimal amount of sleep for achieving one outcome may not be the same as for achieving another (for example, 9 hours of sleep a night might be ideal for athletic performance, while 7 hours might be perfect for academic achievement).

Obesity and weight loss

1. In adults, insufficient sleep (<7 hours) has been associated with an increased risk of obesity; some studies have shown that short sleep duration (<5 hours) is linked to a 15% greater risk of developing obesity and a 6% greater risk in those who sleep 6 hours a night.

2. The link between sleep duration and obesity risk remains unclear. The fact remains that, compared to a sleep duration of 7 hours per night, the risk of obesity increases by 9% for every hour less of sleep. It should be noted that the specific percentage of a higher risk of developing obesity due to short sleep duration may vary from study to study, as different methodologies and sample sizes may result in variations in results. However, overall these studies support the proposition that insufficient sleep, particularly short-term sleep (<5 hours/night), is associated with an increased risk of obesity.

3. Poorer sleep quality has been associated with general obesity. The study showed that disturbed sleep is related to higher BMI and waist circumference.

4. Better sleep quality has been documented to be associated with better weight loss outcomes. Study results suggest that better sleep quality increases the odds of weight loss success by 33%.
